I am an ordained minister serving at Durbanville Baptist Church in a town on the edge of the winelands, near Cape Town in South Africa. I have a passion for people who are hurting and approach my therapy from a Pastoral Narrative perspective.
Narrative Therapy seeks to be a respectful, non- blaming approach to therapy, which centres people as the experts in their own lives. It views problems as separate from people and assumes that people have many skills, competencies, beliefs, value, commitments and abilities that will assist them to reduce the influence of problems in the lives.
The following comment sums up my view of therapy from a pastoral perspective: “[O]ur ultimate relatedness to God takes place in the context of radical non-pathologising grace in which God accepts us without judgment and even without a DSM-IV diagnosis. Rather, God-in-Christ participates with us in a hope-filled conversation toward salvation and wholeness.” Boyd 1996.
After completing my Bachelor of Theology Honours degree, I continued my studies and completed my Master of Arts Degree in Practical Theology, specialising in Narrative Therapy at Pretoria University.
I practice in our church as a therapist, and also see people from other churches and the community in my private practice. (See practice information)
